Prior to the existence of online newspapers or social media, urban kiosks were key locations for the transmission of information, collection, and gossip, where the latest news would spread throughout the city. However, with new ways of consuming information, many of these kiosks have become obsolete and left abandoned.

The Counter-Kiosk exhibition, curated by Space Transcribers, revisits and redefines the legacy of five disused kiosks in Braga, Portugal transforming them into exhibition devices. We invited the architect António Pedro Faria to design the kiosks’ rehabilitation project, and five artist-researchers – Emília Rigová, Hilda de Paulo, Maria Trabulo, Marta Pinto Machado, and Miguel Teodoro – to develop artistic research in Braga, focusing on the stories, collections, and archives of the city's lesser-represented communities.

Through an exhibition route spread across Braga’s public space, the art pieces displayed in each kiosk are the result of the artistic research carried out by the five artists.
