The artist Hilda de Paulo delves into the duality between fury and celebration that permeates trans and travesti experiences. In response to the lack of trans representation in institutional archives in Braga, Hilda creates "Terror travesti," a visual manifesto against cisnormativity. This manifesto highlights objects and trans autobiographies from Portugal as subversive testimonies of power that "raise their voices" and proclaim "trans beauty that is free from cis rules" or "trans skin, cis masks," thus asserting itself as both an intimate and collective battleground. Hilda's work is, therefore, a space of confrontation, visibility, but above all, travesti resistance: not only for her existence but also for that of her sisters.
Hilda de Paulo is an artist, researcher, writer, and independent curator, author of the project Arquivo Gis, and a founding member of Cia. Excessos and the eRevista Performatus. Currently, Hilda is a PhD candidate at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto.
